Sociology will help students to become familiar with the basic concepts, principles, and practices of human society. They will gain a better understanding of human behavior which we observe at home, in school, in our community, and in society. They will also learn about the problems faced by many in American society today including: abuse, racism, discrimination, crime, poverty, and aging.
US HISTORY Grade 9 One Year
Beginning with after Reconstruction, this course will continue both topically and chronologically to the present time. Each unit will be developed completely and, as in the previous year, cover the inter-relationship of American History, economics, government, and sociology.
COMPOSITION 12 Grade 12 One Semester
This course will help to strengthen the communication skills of our Seniors as they prepare for life after high school. The process of communication is explored while refining written, oral, and technology communication skills
DYSTOPIAN LITERATURE Grades 11-12 One Semester
Dystopian worlds often explore the worst parts of society in order to showcase the positive, hard-working people in the world surrounding them. In this class, students will read a variety of dystopian novels to explore how human nature develops when faced with uncertainty and difficulty. The texts for this course will be wide-ranging, including from the canon with the majority of the focus on contemporary works.
CREATIVE WRITING Grades 11-12 One Semester
Students will practice a variety of writing designed to increase creativity while enhancing grammar skills. Students will write a variety of poems and short stories throughout the semester. Some possible units of study may be flash fiction, fractured fairy tales, fables, and tabloids among other choices
CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE Grades 11-12 One Semester
In this class, students will read recently published literature. Class discussions will cover basic literary developments throughout the novel as well as the impact the novel may have had on society when published. Societal issues are reflective in literature. Some of these novels will contain controversial themes and/or topics that are relevant in today’s society.
SOCIAL STUDIES 8 Grade 8 One Year
This course is a study of the United States. Students will start their studies looking into the first Americans to inhabit North America and will run through the Civil War and Reconstruction. Students will investigate the founding and development of the United States and its impact on our government. As the semester progresses, students will learn about various other historical events that occurred from the Colonial Period to the Reconstruction.
