Grade 5

Dear Parents and Students,

Welcome to Ms. Bell’s 5th grade class!  I am pleased to be your child’s teacher this year and I look forward to meeting each of you at our Open House on Tuesday, August 30th, if not sooner.  I have been at John Hustis Elementary for 6 years now and I absolutely love it!  The kids make me laugh every day and I truly enjoy watching them grow into wonderful thinkers with awesome ideas.

I believe all children are full of remarkable possibilities and I look forward to helping each student reach his or her potential.  I also believe that each student is responsible for his or her own learning.  Therefore, I expect my students to do their best regarding both schoolwork and behavior.  With the guidance and direction of both teacher and parents, this can be accomplished.

Fifth graders are given more opportunities than they were in previous grades.  They can choose to be in band, safety patrol and great team building activities.  In Math we will be in our second year with Math Expressions, learning about fractions, decimals, long division, plotting points, analyzing data, rounding numbers, problem-solving skills and strategies, and extended responses.  Reading we will work with authentic literature to focus on comprehension, extended responses, vocabulary and word analysis through Literature Circles.  In Social Studies we will learn about our country’s history and in In Science we will learn about physical, life and earth science through labs and using the Next Generation Science Standards.  In Language Arts we will work on biographies, a research paper of a famous person, and persuasive and narrative writing.  We will also have a spelling list each week of meaningful words we use throughout our classes.

Some things the kids will need with them each and every day is a healthy snack and a book to read.  Our room also tends to be chilly, so a sweater or sweatshirt each day will help them feel more comfortable.

Expect homework every night.  Students record all homework in their assignment notebook and checked by me at the end of class.  Please sign this notebook every night.  Their assignment notebook and all other important information for fifth grade will be in their Daily Organizational Tool (DOT) binder.  This binder will come home each night for you to check and to help keep the students organized.

Thank you for your cooperation and support.  By working together we can make this a great year!  If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know.
